Gettysburg Civil War Battlefield Trip

Troop 23

Trip to the Gettysburg Civil War Battlefield

April 20-22, 2007

This has just been added to our 2007 calendar. We were able to get a camping spot on the battlefield grounds. The boys will participate in the historic trails program and earn the Gettysburg Historic Trails Medal (above center). Many of the activities can be used toward other advancement as well as used for school. The cost for this trip will be $55; this includes all meals from Friday evening till lunch on Sunday (3 of those meals will be in restaurants), admission to the electric map, bus to the Eisenhower farm, the medal and a troop T-shirt. You also have the option of purchasing the 4-piece trail patch (see below) for your son for $5.

We will travel in 2 groups; the first group will leave around 2:30 pm (any boys that get out of school that early will be able to come). This group will get there

around 6:30-7:00pm and they will set up the campsite. The second group will leave OLA around 5:30pm and arrive at Gettysburg around 9:30-10:00 pm, have a late dinner and in bed by 11am. On Saturday we’ll get an early start, go to the visitor’s center, Gettysburg Cemetery and the Eisenhower farm, Lunch at noon at the General Pickett Buffet then in the afternoon it’s the 9 mile Billy Yank Trail (till about 6pm), Dinner at the General Pickett at 7pm then relaxing in the campsite. On Sunday morning after breakfast we’ll hit the 3-mile Johnny Reb Trail. While the boys and a couple of adults are on the trail the rest of the adults will be packing up the campsite (we must be out of the site by 11am). After the trail we’ll get on the road home, we’ll stop at Cabela’s Outdoor World (Hamburg, PA) for their Lunch Buffet and the boys can take some time to look at the animal displays. Then it’s the last stretch home. We should be back in Brooklyn around 4:30-5:00pm.

Our Troop hasn’t done this trip in over 10 years so the adults are excited to go also. There will be more information at the March 19th Parents night and we’ll be able to answer any questions you may have about this trip, summer camp or anything else related to the Troop.

Thanks for your continuing support of the Scouting program.

    Mr Hood,

I came across your posting via a Google Alert and wanted to let you know that the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau would be happy to send you our Visitor Guide to help you prepare for your visit. We would also be happy to send you posters of Gettysburg for each Scout as well. It sounds as though you have a great plan already, but if we can be of assistance please let us know. It is wonderful that you are able to expose these Scouts to part of America’s history.
